# How the AI check works

## Where the check runs

PageCheck runs entirely inside Atlassian on its own model: page text never leaves Atlassian, and the app calls no outside service.

See the [privacy policy](https://atlassian.braingrid.ai/privacy) for what PageCheck stores and for how long.

## What PageCheck reads

When a page version is checked, PageCheck reads the page's prose: paragraphs, lists, tables and panels. Headings aren't checked; they label the passages in the authorship view. Code blocks, macros, images and embeds aren't the page's own writing and are left out too.

A page needs at least 50 words of prose for an AI check. Shorter pages show "Not enough text to check" in the authorship view, and the label stays **Check AI**. A page longer than 200,000 characters of prose shows "Too long to check".

## How the check reads a page

PageCheck checks the page passage by passage and labels each passage AI-written or human-written; the authorship view shows them under the page's own headings.

## What the result means

Every AI check ends in one of three results:

- **AI**: most of the page was written by AI.
- **Mixed**: part of the page was written by AI and the rest by a person. The authorship view says how much, for example "32% of this page was written by AI.", and shows which passages.
- **Human**: no passage of the page was written by AI.

What the results don't mean:

- A result describes the text. It doesn't say who wrote the page or whether AI use was allowed.
- **Human** means PageCheck found no passage written by AI. It doesn't prove that no one used an AI tool while writing.
- **Mixed** means some passages were written by AI and the rest by a person. It says nothing about whether the page is right or finished.

Use the passages to start a conversation about a page.

## When pages are checked

- **Automatic checks on** (the default): an edit is checked when it's published, and a new page when someone first opens it, in the spaces PageCheck runs in.
- **Automatic checks off**: a reader clicks **Check AI** in the authorship view.

Drafts are never checked; only published versions are. If an edit doesn't change the text (a title change, a label, a macro setting), PageCheck reuses the earlier result and uses no AI checks.

## After an edit

The label and the authorship view describe the current version. After an edit, the previous result stays visible in the authorship view, marked with the version it checked, until the current version is checked.

## When a check can't finish

If a check can't finish, the authorship view says so and offers **Try again**. A check that fails uses no AI checks, and it is never shown as **Human**.
